[ Series ] : Haven
[ Canon Point ] : Midway Season 2, episode 11 “Business as Usual”, after Duke Crocker throws him off his boat.
[ History ] :
Shipped out to Afghanistan in late 2001. Army Ranger, his platoon is sent to a supposedly abandoned building. When they arrive, they find out that it isn’t abandoned. The team is captured and in that moment, when Dwight sees his fellow soldiers on their knees convinced that they will never see home again; his Trouble is triggered. Every bullet fired finds it’s way into his body. It saves his platoon, but lands him in the infirmary, wounded and confused. A man arrives and explains to him about Haven, about the troubles and how he can be safe in the small town. The man’s name is Grady and he also tells Dwight about The Guard. The Guard is an organization that protects the troubled in Haven; but Dwight doesn’t feel like he should be protected. He is a soldier, which means he has that need to protect. Grady’s parting words are “Well, then why don’t you do the protecting?”
He moves to Haven soon after, but he is not yet fully associated with The Guard. He brings with him hope for a new beginning for him and for his young daughter Lizzie. There is no mention of her mother and Dwight states that ‘all we have is each other’. They manage to settle down in Haven but eventually The Guard makes contact with Dwight. A woman by the name of Jordan contacts Dwight and states that The Guard could use a man like him. She leaves him a bullet proof vest at his door and eventually accompanies him to varies meetings. There is hints of an attraction between them, or at least a very deep trust. As he continues to participate with the guard, he starts to see what The Guard really is. This is where his ‘cleaning’ starts. His experience being an Army Ranger comes in handy as he works to protect and cover up what the Troubled have done. Dwight doesn’t seem to mind much, but is beginning to question his involvement with the group. The final straws comes when The Guard asks him to kill someone; Dwight refuses and leaves. Of course leaving The Guard isn’t so easy, especially not with the knowledge that he was allowed to gain. So members of The Guard, his former teammates, are sent to kill him. They comes straight to his door and he goes out ot meet them. When they pull out a gun he wrestles it away from them after a bit of a struggle. During which the gun goes off. Dwight shows confusion because the bullet should have come towards him. The answer is clear when he turns around and sees his daughter laying dead just inside the door. Lizzie had come to see what was happening and the trauma of seeing her father facing an armed man caused her Trouble, the same trouble that Dwight has, to trigger. The stray bullet came towards her instead.
Dwight cuts all ties with The Guard and its members after that, swearing that they will never hurt someone like they hurt him. If asked he will say that the Guard cost him everything. He begins to work with the local Police Chief, Garland Wuornos, a Troubled man who is literally holding the town together. Along with the chief, Dwight works to clean up evidence of the troubles. Making excuses on why certain things happened, cleaning up suspicious dead bodies or accidents. He is often interviewed by Dave and Vince Teague to give a clear cover story for whatever Trouble happens in Haven.
[ Personality ] :
The three other main characters- Audrey Parker, Duke Crocker and Nathan Wuornos, trust Dwight completely. If there is anything needed to be fixed, cleaned up or taken care of, they call Dwight. He is the one they can rely on to do whatever is needed to not only keep the Troubles hidden but to also help out in just about any situation. Despite what goes on between those three, they know Dwight will help them out whenever they need it.
Dwight can be very closed off, unless talking about his past can help out someone he cares about. The entire reason that he has stayed in Haven is that; to help those who the Guard would go after. He keeps to himself, trusting The Guard has made him a rather private person. It takes a bit to get him to speak about his past, unless asked directly he won’t mention anything. Even then it’s rather short and to the point. Unless he needs to elaborate; such as is happening in Season 3. The Guard has become a problem and Dwight has openly discussed his past and involvement with the group. This surprises all those that know him well, which shows just how long he has been private. This opening up shows just how passionate he is about helping people. it’s what leads him to show himself to Nathan a few weeks after Garland’s death. He is willing to do anything to protect innocent people.
His daughter’s death, however, did break Dwight badly. Though he is slowly ’fixing’ himself, he still has moments where certain phrases or questions make his jaw clench or his rare temper to flare. Mostly it’s people who know what has happened to him, but sometimes even a wrongly asked innocent question can make him clam up and focus solely on his work. He also has small moments where he thinks he sees or hears his daughter, but he knows very well that it’s just his mind trying to make things better (or worse as the case may be). Aside these moments though, Dwight is a very genuine and honest person. He doesn’t hide his emotions or his thoughts unless it’s a matter of safety. This causes him to come across as rather calm and laidback, letting the world roll off his shoulders. It doesn’t mean his lazy though, or inattentive. His training has him on guard at all times but after so many years it doesn’t bother him or show to most people. He can smile and enjoys simple things like hunting or simply walking around Haven.
On a final note, the most important part of Dwight is that he is very, very stubborn. He will not back down from anything if he feels himself in the right. He’s not stupidly stubborn, the right person can convince him to change his mind but it takes a little work even then. His stubborn side does come in handy though, it gives him a confidence when he’s ’cleaning’ and makes it easier for people to buy whatever story he’s using to cover up the ’weirdness of the day’. He also has a big soft spot for kids, they can wrap him around their little finger without a problem. Dwight will put his very life on the line for a child, no questions about it and regardless of what that child is or has done.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Dwight is a fully trained and seasoned Army Ranger. He fought for several years in Afghanistan before his Trouble sent him home. As such he is highly trained in Hand to Hand combat, numerous weapons and the amazing and useful ability to make sure that people don’t see what they are not supposed to. He is very shrewd, cunning even, and he can cover up any activity if given the order and reason to. He’s also very adept at construction and general handiwork. It’s how he made a living in Haven when not keeping the Troubles under wraps.
One strength I would like to point out is just how tough this guy is. He will shrug off any pain and continue whatever he is doing. He’s walked out of the woods carrying a child, with a bare trap clamped around his ankle. So…high pain tolerance is definitely a strength.
His weakness is his Trouble, because no matter how crafty, fast or lucky he is a bullet will hit him regardless. It is also a danger to people around him if they are too close since a bullet won’t care what it has to go through to get to Dwight. The other weakness that is part of this is that Kevlar can only cover so much of his body, so there are points where a bullet can hit him straight through.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Dwight is Troubled. In Haven lore that means that he has a supernatural curse on his bloodline. His father was afflicted and so was his daughter. His Trouble is being a Bullet Magnet; any bullet within a hundred yard will come towards him. Hence why he is always covered neck to toe in Kevlar. He only takes it off when he is safely at home.
His head, hands, neck and legs below the knee are the only places not covered.
[ Sample ] :
Dwight coughed and sputtered, flailing his arms around as he fought to reach the surface. Suddenly he felt his knees resting on something hard, instead of the current of Haven Bay brushing against them. His eyes snap open and he finds himself kneeling inside a fountain. A few coughs free his lungs of water and he wipes his face. This was not Haven. He knew the town like the back of his hand and there was no fountain like this. A small coiling of panic grips his stomach before he pushes it aside and cautiously looks around. His training comes back automatically and he takes in his surroundings. The Cleaner curses himself for not bringing his crossbow onto Crocker’s boat. Not that he’d felt there would be any use for it against the skinny pirate; originally.
“So. Not Haven. But, this place is still by an ocean. An ocean but I don't hear...“ His train of thought is cut off as he glances up and notices that there is something surrounding the area. He narrows his eyes in confusion, simply letting his mind register the fact that there are fish swimming above his head. He shakes his head and rubs his temple. Okay, last thing he remembered was getting tossed off a boat by Duke. He remembers seeing Audrey looking over the side in worry before he went under the water to start swimming for shore.
“Then how did I end up in a fountain..” He glances up, “And under a dome?”
This is almost too strange for him to deal with; just almost. Finding that the locals seem to be simply ignoring the dripping wet man, Dwight sits down on the edge of the fountain and starts to ring out his jacket and hair. That’s when he notices the strange device leaning against the cement. Cautiously he reaches down and lifts it up, turning the star fish over in his hand. And what was he supposed to do with this?
